Start with the tattoo, not the appointment
For a first tattoo, it is easy to focus on getting a date before thinking through the piece itself. Start with the idea, what it means to you, the visual direction you like and where you are considering placing it.
You do not need to design the finished tattoo yourself. References can help explain the mood, style, subject or details you like, then the artist can discuss how those ideas may work as a tattoo.
Choose an artist by looking at real work
Look through the artist's actual tattoo work and consider whether the execution and visual approach fit what you want. Price and convenience matter, but neither tells you by itself whether an artist is right for your tattoo.
You should also be comfortable communicating with the artist about placement, size, design direction, the session and aftercare.
Understand the price before the session
Tattoo prices vary because the work varies. Size, detail, placement, preparation and the tattooing involved can all affect the final price.
At Inking Tattoos, tattoos start from KSh 1,000. That is a starting price rather than a promise that every tattoo costs KSh 1,000. Send Jay the actual idea, approximate size and placement so the work can be discussed properly.
Studio and mobile tattoo sessions are different options
A fixed studio is not the only way to discuss getting tattooed. Some artists also offer mobile sessions, where the artist travels to an agreed location.
Jay is based in Limuru and also works as a mobile tattoo artist. If you are interested in a mobile session, include your location when you contact him. Availability depends on the location and arrangement.
Prepare yourself for the day
Arrive rested, eat beforehand and stay hydrated. Wear clothing that gives practical access to the tattoo area while keeping you comfortable.
Give the appointment enough time for final discussion, placement and the tattoo itself. Your first tattoo does not need to feel rushed.
Aftercare is part of getting tattooed
A tattoo is not finished from your body's point of view when the session ends. Follow the aftercare instructions you are given, keep the healing area clean as directed and avoid picking or scratching it.
Plan around activities such as swimming and strong sun exposure while the tattoo heals. If you develop worsening redness, swelling, heat or pain, discharge, fever or feel unwell, seek medical advice.
What to send Jay about your first tattoo
A useful first message can be simple: explain that it is your first tattoo, describe the idea, attach any references, and mention the approximate size and placement if you know them.
If you want to discuss a mobile tattoo session, add your location. Jay can then respond to the actual piece rather than trying to price or plan a tattoo without enough information.
